In some of the new planes the American Airlines will be squeezing the distance between seats in economy section.

Representative of the airline said for the three rows in economy seats will have 29 inches of legroom, which is usually 31 inches.

In industry jargon the space between back of one seat and the back of next is called “pitch.”

American Airlines spokesman Joshua Freed said the seat backs on the 737-Max is thinner and so it will minimize the effect on passenger limbs.

Freed however was not able to calculate how many more seats the planes can accommodate. The current number is 160 seats.

Meanwhile, the Southwest Airlines too will start operating the 737-Max later this year on October 1 and the pitch will be of 32-inch on all the seats.

ThePointsGuy.com called last year a 29-inch pitch to be miserable and 34-inch is super comfy that is found in JetBlue’s A320 planes.

The announcement of American Airlines coincided with the news from US lawmakers that the government would intervene if customer service is not improved by the airlines voluntarily.
