One of India’s most popular and powerful politicians, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaraman died Monday after receiving treatment for months in Chennai. She was 68.

The “Amma” suffered a cardiac arrest Sunday evening and was declared dead by Apollo Hospitals at 11:30 p.m. on Monday adding every possible clinical attempt was made to sustain her revival.

A statement issued by the hospital said the nursing as well as paramedical staff strived hard to provide the beloved chief minister the highest standards of care.

Tamila Nadu has declared three-day mourning across the state for the sad demise of actress-turned-politician.
