There’s lot of uncertainties to what will be the relationship between United Kingdom and European Union in future, probably after about three years. Negotiators of both the sides have started the divorce talks.

UK’s top negotiator David Davis said Monday there is more that unites Britain and EU than what divides them.

During the hours of discussions on the first day of long negotiations the officials took a short break to pose for photographs while holding gifts.

Davis gave EU negotiator Michel Barnier a book about hiking and Barnier on his part handed over a walking stick from his home region in the Alps.

The officials will be addressing several issues like the rights of British citizens in the EU and vice versa, how much money will be owed by Britain and how to minimize split effects on the fragile peace between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

If things goes well and all the EU countries agree to an extension, UK may leave the bloc by March 2019.

The negotiation talks are scheduled for a week in every month until an agreement is reached between the two sides.

Following the first day talk Barnier said, “It was very important and useful to start off on the right foot as the clock is ticking.”

The British citizens voted for withdrawal of UK from EU in a referendum last year in July. The exit is commonly termed as Brexit.
