With the announcement the election need to be conducted no later than July 29, 2017.

Prior to the court order the electoral commission had informed Prime Minister Emmanuel Ngondet that organizing an election in December would be impossible.

Interior Minister Lambert meanwhile referred in a statement too about a shortage of funds to organize the ballot as scheduled earlier.

The constitutional court took into account the unforseen costs that had resulted from the clashes after presidential election in August this year.

Ali Bongo had won the presidential election by just 6,000 votes that resulted with sparking two days of rioting and protests. At least three people were killed in the violence and 800 others were arrested.

The result was widely rejected by rival Jean Ping and re-election was confirmed by Gabon’s top court on September 23.

Bongo proposed talks with the opposition which was repeatedly rejected by Ping.

Gabon gained independence in 1960 from France. Located on the equator, it is a sovereign state on the west coast of Central Africa, bordered by Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Congo and Gulf of Guinea.

Libreville is the capital and largest city of the country which has a population of about 1.5 million people.
