One or two cigarettes a day or even a week is still harmful to the body, reveals a new study that claims such people face higher risk of earlier death compared to those who don’t smoke.

A study was conducted by the National Cancer Institute and it is found those who smoke consistently at least one cigarette a day over their lifetimes had increased risk of death by 64 percent compared to those who don’t smoke.

The study further adds people who smoked up to ten cigarettes a day is likely at the risk of death by 87 percent.

The link of smoking is high to lung cancer and those who smoked at least less than one cigarette a day was at risk of dying by 9 percent.

NCI researcher Maki Inoue Choi said, “The message is that there is no safe level of smoking.”

Details of the study are published in the JAMA Internal Medicine.

The researchers said people still believe few cigarettes a day or a week was safe.
