Government of Maldives will not be abiding the order of Supreme Court to release jailed opposition leaders and will be resisting attempts to impeach impeach President Abdulla Yameen, said attorney general Sunday.

The Apex Court’s order came last week and Yameen has been disobeying the verdict to release jailed opposition leaders. It is learned by the government the court may fire the president. However, according to the government’s statement such a move would be illegal.

Meanwhile, the police as well as the army have been instructed not to abide to the order of releasing jailed opposition leaders.

Briefing to the media people in capital Male the president said, “We have received information that things might happen that will lead to a national security crisis.”

Head of the armed forces and new police chief too were present in the press conference on Sunday. Late last week the government had fired two police chiefs.

The last week’s verdict of the Apex Court threw out terrorism convictions against nine opposition leaders including former president Mohamed Nasheed. The court also ordered to bring back the twelve stripped members of parliament into the legislature.

The opposition leaders claim corruptions have been seen under the Yameen government and they have evidence to it. The president has however denied all such allegations.

Yameen became president of Maldives in 2013 and is now under international pressure to abide to Supreme Court’s order. He is facing elections in October this year.

Nasheed stepped down in 2012 and since then the Indian Ocean island chain country of around 400,000 people is experiencing political unrest.
