Soundgarden band’s lead singer Rocker Chris Cornell was found dead in a MGM Grand Detroit hotel room in Detroit on Wednesday night following his performance at a concert in Fox Theatre. He was 52.

Without giving much detail the Detroit police spokesman Michael Woody said Thursday morning police are investigating the death as a possible suicide and the move is based on certain things observed at the scene.

Cornell’s wife and family members are shocked at the unexpected death of the singer and it is learned they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause of death.

His representative Brian Bumbery said in a press statement the family member has asked for privacy to the doctors.

Bumbery added a family friend was asked to contact Cornell. The person had to force open hotel room door and discovered the vocalist on the bathroom floor.

Wayne County spokesman Lisa Croff said an autopsy is in progress and later today some information related to the singer’s death could be released.

Cornell formed Soundgarden in 1984 with lead guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. He left the band in 1997 and joined Audioslave in 2001, but only to be reunited again in 2010.
