South Sudanese government is seeking to make Swahili as the official language of the country and has called Tanzania to send related teachers who can teach the language to students in schools ahead of the adoption.

Vice President Taban Deng Gai met on Tuesday his Tanzanian counterpart Samia Hassan on the sidelines of African Union Summit.

The country also requested for assistance in health, security and agriculture sectors, reports local media The Citizen.

South Sudan is the latest member of East African Community (EAC) after depositing instruments of ratification in the Accession to the EAC Treaty in 2016.

Swahili is the official language for the EAC too. It was adopted in 2007.

Currently Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda use Swahili as their official language alongside English. Rwanda too is learned to be adopting the same as their national language after Kinyarwanda, French and English.

Swahili is also called as Kiswahili and considered as the first language of the Swahili people. It is widely used in African Great Lakes region. The official language in Comoros, Shikomor, is related to Swahili.
