State Government Didn’t Demolish Sabo Market: Lagos

The Lagos State government has reconfirmed once again in the same week that its officials didn’t help in the demolition Sabo market on Thursday night that resulted with the loss of good worth millions of naira.

The market traders said a demolition notice was served to all of them some two weeks ago. They added government officials accompanies by armed police demolished the market on Itoikin road in Ikorodu.

However, Steve Ayorinde, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, said it was an act of “unscrupulous and desperate” developers who may have been helped by some of the local government officials too in the demolition work.

Ayorinde confirmed the state government was not involved in any way in the demolition of the market and it is also true it cannot be done without following due process.

The commissioner added initial investigation finds some private developers were involved in the act and they were supported by certain local government officers as well as engagement of a certain uniformed personnel who acted beyond their brief.

The press statement of Ayorinde further continued that such pattern of demolition have been found in other cases too lately that carried out spurious orders without any proper notice served.
