Tanzania Launches New Initiative To Protect Burundi Refugees

East African nation’s Deputy Minister for Home Affairs, Hamadi Masauni, launched in Dar es Salaam on Friday an initiative for the refugees that is designed with better protection with a more systematic and sustainable response.

The new initiative is titled as Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF) in Tanzania.

He also appealed to the international community for more adequate support to the country in meeting needs of the refugees.

The minister added fully supporting role is to be played by the international community in the final local integration of the former 1972 Burundian refugees in Tanzania who have been granted citizenship.

UN agencies, international financial institutions, development partners, humanitarian and development NGOs, members of civil society and academia committed to working together attended the launching ceremony in the city.

Masauni continued, “Tanzania recognizes the unity of people, and we look forward to working alongside partners, both old and new, towards ensuring refugees and host communities in Tanzania are given the best opportunities to live alongside one another prosperously and peacefully.”

Burundi violence outbreak took place in 2015 and as per the data made available for the end of April 2017 there are more than 250,000 Burundi refugees in Tanzania and the total number of refugees count is over 312,000.

The arrivals of refugees are still continuing in good strength.
