Typhoon Megi Hits Taiwan; 4 Killed, 300 Injured; Schools, Offices Closed

Initial report suggests four people have been killed and more than 300 others injured after Typhoon Megi hit Taiwan’s northeastern coastline.

Central News Agency of the country reveals about 2,700,000 homes are now without power and Yilan County has received 38 inches of rainfall. The winds speed is up to 143 miles per hour.

Taiwan has been hit by third typhoon in the period of just two weeks.

Central Emergency Operations Center of the country has warned people to stay indoor as most of the injuries are due to traffic accidents and flying objects.

Spokesman of the center said, “Stay home and reduce unnecessary going out… The effect of the typhoon will impact us until tomorrow morning.”

Officially it is revealed about 1,400 people were evacuated from the mountainous areas before the typhoon hit the country and presently more 2,900 people are kept in shelter across Taiwan.

Mega made landfall at around 1:30 p.m. local time with strong winds and flooding rain.

It is said the typhoon would weaken up entering Fujian in eastern China after 24 hours, but for the next twelve hours it will continue to batter Taiwan.

Meanwhile, schools and offices were closed today ahead of the typhoon hitting the shores. Taiwan stock exchange was closed too. Domestic flights and high-speed rail services were canceled.
