An Afghan soldier is alleged to have fired inside a military compound in northern Afghanistan and injured about seven US troops. This is the second insider attack in a week.

The incident took place during a training exercise at around 2 p.m. local time at Camp Shaheen in Mazar-e-Sharif.

It is learned the Afghan soldier fired three rocket-propelled grenades and later continued with two M4 carbines. An American armed with a piston shot the assailant dead.

NATO command headquartered in Kabul released a statement confirmed no American fatalities.

About a week ago three members of US troops were killed when an Afghan soldier opened fire.

US troops are also at risk in other parts of Afghanistan. Earlier this year in March a similar insider attack wounded three US soldiers at an Afghan military complex in Helmand province.

The latest attack has occurred when the White House is prepared to send additional 4,000 American troops to Afghanistan to set up counter terror operations.

US President Donald Trump is learned to have delegated authority on the number of troops in Afghanistan to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

Addressing to the House and Senate lawmakers, Mattis said by mid-July will be providing a comprehensive strategy for the country.
