A report published just ahead of the World AIDS Day on December 1 reveals one out of seven HIV people don’t know they are infected with the virus.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) report adds there are about 810,000 HIV patients in the EU apart from Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein and 122,000 of them are unaware they have the virus.

ECDC acting director Andrea Ammon said the figure is worrying as the number of new infections each year is same if taken the data of past one decade.

He added, “The findings are definitely of concern. They tell us that we still have a lot to do despite all the HIV prevention efforts.”

Last year about 30,000 people were newly diagnosed with the HIV infections in the region.

The report further reveals the main way of HIV transmission in the region is sex between men which accounted for 42 percent of diagnoses. Transmission of the virus in sex between men and women accounted for under a third of transmission and the infection from drug accounted for just 4 percent.
