More than sixty people were killed in southern Nigeria after a roof of a church collapsed during a service.

State inquiry has been set up to investigate whether the building materials were comprised in the construction of the Reigners Bible Church International in Akwa Ibom state capital Uyo.

Governor Udom Emmanuel too was present during the service with hundreds of people inside the church when metal girders collapsed and corrugated iron roof caved in.

It is learned the church was still in construction phase and worshippers had gathered for a ceremony to ordain church founder Akan Weeks.

Weeks as well as Emmanuel together preached God will make his followers rich.

Rescue team rushed to the site immediately after the church roof collapsed and was able to retrieve bodies of sixty victims. It is being said the toll may rise as a crane removes debris.

Collapsing of buildings is common in Nigeria. In 2014 more than 100 people were killed in Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos when a multi-storey guesthouse of the Synagogue Church of All Nations collapsed. Founder of the church, its trustees and two structural engineers were arrested on grounds of criminal negligence, but due to delay in trial they are still unpunished.

Usually contractors compromise with building standards and bribe inspectors to get the permit on shoddy work.
