Aleppo may fall in weeks or months of time to Syrian government forces backed by Russian airstrikes amid the use of most lethal bombardment in about six years of civil war, but the war will still go one.

Aleppo is an important city strategically as well as in terms of economy and trading center for Syria. It is key to controlling northwest part of the country.

Win on it will be an important military triumph for the government and his Russian allies. More to this, the win will be a crippling setback for the Western-backed Syrian rebels.

However, political experts believe fall of Aleppo will not be an end to the long-running war in Syria. The war seems to continue further and further. It may also pave way to a Sunni guerrilla insurgency and President Bashar al-Assad will be a leader of a fragmented country that would be broken too. Also, not to forget here the world’s worst refugee crisis since World War Two would continue.

US ambassador to Syria in 2011-14 Robert Ford said, “The Russians are doing in Aleppo and Syria what they did in Grozny — it is the same.”

Meanwhile, for the first time Russia has deployed advanced anti-missile system to fight against the rebels of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Syria with ramping up of the military operations.
