American University of Afghanistan was attacked Wednesday in Kabul killing one security person and injuring 21 students.

Witnesses said two attackers fired guns and detonated explosives after entering the campus. Some fled and others hid inside buildings.

Interior Ministry spokesman Siddiq Siddiqui said a police operation was set and both the attackers are shot to death.

The school stands as a symbol of cooperation between the two nations even though few Americans study here.

A teacher said the attacks occurred Wednesday evening when he was teaching chemistry in the class. The attackers detonated explosives and opened fire. The lights went out immediately after the attacks in the classroom.

Ahmad Samim added further, “It was very dark, (and) everyone was running. Everyone started screaming… (It) was the scariest moment in my life. I was just thinking about my son and daughter who are in (the United States).”

Samim is a US citizen like other teachers in the school. He took off running with the students seeing black smoke.

The attack took place at around 7:50 p.m. local time (11:20 a.m. ET). Details of it are yet to arrive. No group has claimed responsibility as of now.

A student said everyone looked around for an escape through an emergency exit area and everyone was seen running out to hid or flee.
