Arthritis Drug Effective In Treating Alzheimer’s Disease Too: Study

One of the oldest drugs, Salsalate, is found to be effective in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease too apart from being prescribed for Arthritis.

In a new experiment conducted on mice in laboratory researchers in the US found the drug prevented building up of toxic proteins in the brain and help in reversing the damage already done.

As of now the study has been conducted only on mice, further research is required before Salsalate could be prescribed for human to fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

According to the US scientists, this is the first time a drug has shown reversing the toxic effects and so it is hoped soon it will be helpful in treating the disease in human.

Doug Brown, director of research and development at Alzheimer’s Society, said the drug is well known in terms of its mechanism and side effects too, and hence it is to be confirmed whether the same can be prescribed to patients diagnosed with dementia.
