BREAKING: Indonesia Hit By Strong Earthquake; 25 Dead

Indonesia was rocked with a strong undersea earthquake early Wednesday causing dozens of buildings to collapse. More than two dozen people are feared to be dead.

The quake hit Aceh province of the country and rescue operations are underway in Meureudu, a severely affected town in Pidie Jaya district.

According to district chief Aiyub Abbas, hundreds of people have been wounded in the quake and over forty buildings have been flattened including stores, mosques and homes.

Abbas also confirmed about 25 people have been killed in the district due to massive earthquake of 6.4-magnitude that struck at 5:03 a.m. local time. The epicenter was 10 kilometers north of Reuleut, a town in northern Aceh, and at a depth of 17 kilometers.

No tsunami risk has been issued.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes as it is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

The country was struck with a massive earthquake in December 2004 off Sumatra island that killed 230,000 people in about one dozen countries. The quake had triggered tsunami. In Indonesia alone over 160,000 people died and most of those in Aceh.
