At least one villager has been killed in a massive earthquake of 6.5-magnitude hit a remote area of China’s extreme west late Friday. Emergency response team has been dispatched by the Chinese government and some railways in southern Xinjiang have been closed too.

It is reported more than fifty homes have been damaged and about 30 structures have collapsed near the bordering areas with Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

According to the United States Geological Survey the quake struck western Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and it was quite shallow, at a depth of 12 kilometers.

The Xinjiang highland area is mostly rural and so the damage caused was not extensive. Usually shallow earthquakes causes much damage in populated urban areas.

On December 7 in 2015 a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck neighboring Tajikistan. In last five years more than 80 quakes of M4 or more have hit the area.
