BREAKING: Peru Hit By Powerful Earthquake

Southern Peru was hit by a powerful earthquake on Sunday at around 4.18 a.m. local time and the shock was felt as far as Lima. Two people have been reported dead and 65 others injured. Structural damage has been found to a bridge in Arequipa too.

The quake was of 7.3-magnitude and 31 kilometers fro the seaside town of Acari in Arequipa region.

Head of the National Civil Defence Institute, General Jorge Chavez, said humanitarian aid is being delivered by military planes. Tents are being given to the affected areas too.

Tsunami threat was ruled out by the Peruvian navy as well as the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii.

Homes made of adobe in Pthe coastal areas like Lomas collapsed. One dead is reported from Yauca district and another from Bella Union district.

Electricity was cut off in several municipalities immediately after the earthquake and several roads were closed too.

Pope Francis is scheduled to arrive Peru on Thursday following his Chile tour.

In October 2016 Peru was hit by a 6.3-magnitude quake that left four people injured.

In August 2007 a major earthquake in the region killed 595 people.
