BREAKING: Powerful 7.8 Earthquake Hits Solomon Islands

A massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Solomon Islands early Friday at 4:38 a.m. local time at a depth of around 25 miles. A small tsunami was warned and residents evacuated the areas moving uphill.

Solomon authorities warned threat of unusual waves and abnormal high tides.

Hours after the quake life appeared back to normal for most of the people, but people in southern Makira province remained cautious as the area was closest to the epicentre.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) recorded a 43cm rise in the sea level in the region after the quake.

Politician Martin Karani said waves came into the villages and took away dugout canoes from the shore.

In 2007 the Solomon was hit by a 8.1 magnitude quake and more than half ton people were killed.

Solomons is on the geologically active Pacific Ring of Fire. It is highly prone to earthquakes.

Lyndene Wan from the charity group Plan International Australia said, “Things definitely shook for some minutes, but I’m walking around, I’ve been up the hill, and looking out over Honiara there is no visible damage here.”
