Canada To Welcome 300,000 Economic Immigrants Next Year

Canada agreed on Monday to be absorbing about 300,000 immigrants by next year in a move to maintain this year’s target amid recommendations from several corners to increase it to help spur economic growth.

The country said majority of the immigrants would be selected as economic immigrants and all will be a new baseline for admission of permanent residents.

The average immigrants admitted between 2011 and 2015 however were less to 259,542.

According to immigration minister John McCallum, the target of 300,000 immigrants laid the foundation for future immigration growth.

Briefing to the reporters he said, “I do believe it is true that more immigrants for Canada would be a good policy for demographic reasons.”

Canada is currently having an aging population and this is a great threat to the economic growth. Finance minister Bill Morneau is suggested by economic advisory council to increase annual immigration target to 450,000 in the period of next five years to attract top talent to Canadian companies.

McCallum said he has agreed to the new recommendations and added, “That number is a conceivable number for some date in the future, but certainly not for 2017.”

Meanwhile, the government too added the number of immigrants to increase next year to 172,500 from 160,600 from 2016’s and also the number of refugees to decrease from 55,800 to 40,000.

The current population of the country is about 35 million.
