China Stamps New Law Imposing Several Restrictions On Foreign Nongovernment Groups

A new law has been passed and under it over 7,000 foreign nongovernment groups is said to be affected.

Henceforth the foreign groups working in China need to find an official Chinese sponsor and they also need to register with the police. Organization from Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan are not excluded from the new law.

Groups failing to abide by the new law will be forced to stop operation in China.

Experts believe the new law will probably lead to curtailing or elimination of programs by many groups as they may have hard time getting approval.

The early draft of the new law started circulating last year and it caused enough anxiety among the organizations. On Thursday afternoon the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress said after taking a review of the third draft from Monday onward they have put an official stamp on the policies and it will go in effect from June 1, 2017.

Beijing is suspicious of foreign and Chinese nongovernment organizations which are funded from outside.
