A commuter train derailed by a fallen tree in remote area Niles Canyon in Northern California late Monday injuring more than fourteen passengers. One of the cars out of six plunged into a swollen creek, said authorities of ACE (Altamont Corridor Express) Train, which operates service between San Jose and Stockton.
Nine of thbe wounded were transported to a nearby hospital. Four had serious injuries but non-life threatening while the remaining five had minor injuries.
Official statement of train operator ACE says, “ACE train 10 struck a tree on the train tracks at mile post 34 between Fremont, Ca and Pleasanton, Ca.”
Video footage in the media shows front car plunged into a creek.
Alameda County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Kelly said it was raining during the incident and was dark. No passenger was killed in the accident and this is something of miracle.
According to Alameda County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. J.D. Nelson, the incident took place near Niles Canyon Road in Sunol, which is about 45 miles east of San Francisco.
Nelson added the crews had to fight with the currents to pull trapped passengers.
ACE official Steve Walker said there were one crew member and six passengers in the front car at the time of incidence.
Walker added the second car of the train too went off the tracks but it remained upright.
The train departed San Jose at 6:38 p.m. (local time) and was to reach Stockton at 8:50 p.m. (local time).
Officially it has been announced there would be no trains running on Tuesday.
