Congolese President Joseph Kabila is reported to have agreed to a deal with the opposition to quit power in 2017.

Kabila also agreed to the breakthrough political deal on Friday to make way for elections next year and make peaceful transition of power since Congo gained independence in 1960.

The deal comes after the death of dozens of people this week amid protests from across the country over Kabila’s tenure.

Kabila became president after assassination of his father in 2001. His remained in office for two terms and constitutional mandate ended on Tuesday. He attempted to crush dissent and enable extension of his tenure.

The Catholic church mediated talks between Kabila and the opposition.

The deal is yet to be finalized and opposition leader Joseph Olenghankoy said they are in the process of working and it is yet not known what will be the outcome.

Kabila meanwhile said he is supporting the talks but would comment on the substance later.

If Kabila quits power it will be a big achievement for the Catholic church too and the country will be saved from sliding back into anarchy and war.

Meanwhile, it is also learned Pope Francis has heaped pressure on both the sides to help find a peaceful solution to the issue.
