Dozens Rescued, Over 100 Missing, As Waves Sink Indonesian Boat

At least 39 survivors have been pulled out by rescue team apart from four dead bodies from a passenger boat in central Indonesia that sank Sunday due to bad weather. Search is still under progress for scores of other missing.

Since Saturday one ferry serving the Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi- Siwa, South Sulawesi route went missing due to engine failure amid high waves. More than 100 people are missing.

According to website ManadoKota.com, the Marina Baru named boat had some 108 to 120 people on board before departing from Kolaka in southeast Sulawesi.

Police said the patrolling boats have been dispatched to look for the boat that is believed to have gone underwater 12 miles away from the destination.

Detiknews reveals at least 14 children were also aboard the fiberglass ferry.

Television footage shows family members in waiting anxiously at the Siwa port for their loved ones.

In recent years hundreds of people have been killed due to boat accidents in Indonesia. Usually it has been seen the boats are overcrowded and carelessness in enforcing safety regulations.

Indonesia is a vast country with over 17,000 islands having population of 250 million. In such condition boats are cheaper as well as popular form of transportation.
