If your next visit to Taiwan includes eating of dog and cat meat, here’s a sad news for you. The country has now banned the food completely.

An amendment to the animal protection laws bans selling, purchasing and eating of cat or dog meat in the country. Those found not abiding by the new law will be fined between 1,300 and 6,500 pounds apart from public shaming.

The country had earlier too banned the sale of dog meat, but Taipei Times revealed in 2011 restaurants and slaughterhouses were escaping prosecution.

Last year a lamb meat restaurant was found serving dog meat to customers just to curtail the cost.

If anyone is found repeatedly breaking the new law could be fined heavily and up to 130,000 pounds.

In several parts of Asia eating of dog and cat meat is common and international animal rights campaigners have regularly objected the habit and raised concern against it.

China’s Guangxi province is famous for an annual summer event in the month of June where breeders sell live dogs for meat.

The local people celebrate the summer solstice by gathering and eating dog meat as well as lychees.

Under the new law Taiwan has also banned making dogs walk or run alongside a car or scooter by attaching to the vehicle.
