Junior doctors in England are going on strike on Tuesday and Wednesday between 08:00 BST and 17:00 BST each day. For the first time the emergency care will be affected too. The doctors will have walkout of accident and emergency units, mental health crisis teams, resuscitation and urgent maternity services too.

The British Medical Association (BMA) has also said they would call off the strike if Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt’s threat to impose a contract on the junior doctors is lifted.

Hunt meanwhile has urged the BMA to call off the two one-day strike and meet him for talks. He has also refused to postpone the introduction of the new contract that was suggested over the weekend in a last-minute cross-party proposal.

Dismissing the proposal as Labour opportunism, Hunt insists the Government will be rolling out slowly.

The strike will delay about 112,856 outpatient appointments and 12,711 planned operations, said NHS England.

Earlier, a 48-hour walkout on April 6 delayed 5,000 operations and procedures.
