There’s a chill in the air…it’s time to get out the sweaters. The splendor that is fall in the northeast is descending upon us. What better way to bid farewell to summer than to drive the country roads of New York just as the leaves begin to change.

Apple Festivals in New York State

Festivals don’t end with summer. As a celebration of the harvest season, apples are celebrated in New York. Known for its variety of apples and apple orchards, New York has an apple for everyone’s taste.

According to the NY Apple Country website, September and October are full of events around the apple harvest. This website lists Apple Festivals across the state by county and provides information about locations, dates and directions for these autumnal festivals.

Some festivals feature extensive arts and crafts vendors, as well as a variety of food booths and even a few apple pie baking contests. A day trip or a weekend excursion can be planned for the family or a peaceful getaway for empty nesters to flee the bustle of the city.

Farmers Markets & Pick-Your-Own-Apple Orchards

There is also a list on the NY Apple Country website of farmers markets and pick-your-own-apple orchards by county. Gather the family together for an hour or two of apple picking. Pack a picnic lunch and blanket or buy some of the homemade goodies available at the market. Take home a freshly baked apple pie or apple dumplings for dessert.

The youngsters will love to get up close and personal with farm animals that have been set up at some farms with a petting zoo. Some of the farms even provide hay rides out to the orchard.
