Friday was a coal-free day for Britain. The National Grid tweeted to have achieved a milestone with first ever working day without the fossil fuel power since the Industrial Revolution.

United Kingdom has gradually changed the sources of power in recent years to gas, nuclear, solar and wind to keep up the climate change commitment on international platform.

The National Grid control room hailed the achievement saying it was the first continuous 24-hour coal-free period for the country since mankind started using fossil fuel.

On Thursday the West Burton 1 power station went offline. It was coal-fired power plant.

National Grid spokesman said the polluting fuel has now been phased out.

In recent years use of coals to generate power has declined significantly. In 2016 just 9 percent of electricity was generated from coal. In 2015 the figure was 23 percent.

The last coal power station of the country will be completely shut down by 2025.

Head of energy at Greenpeace UK, Hannah Martin, said the country is already moving towards a low carbon economy.

He added, “The first day without coal in Britain since the Industrial Revolution marks a watershed in the energy transition. A decade ago, a day without coal would have been unimaginable, and in 10 years’ time our energy system will have radically transformed again.”
