Monday is the first day of the latest ban on face veils in Sri Lanka and amid fresh security many Muslim women spoke against the move keeping the hope that it would be a temporary measure.

The ban was announced Saturday night in the wake of new intelligence input that similar attacks like the Easter Sunday churches and hotels blasts could take place in the country.

More than 250 people lost their lives in the multiple suicide explosions on the morning of Easter Sunday.

The new order cited national security and said any face garment which hinders identification is banned under emergency law.

Meanwhile, changes have been made in the security set-up too while the ban goes in effect. Police chief and defence secretary have been replaced.

Tamil writer and activist Sharmila Seyyid said the new ban is leading to chaos in the country and such unusual incidences have been reported where men were seen chasing women for remove their veils forcefully.

She added, “The government should specify who can implement the rule — just about anyone or only security personnel.”

All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ulema (ACJU) assistant manager Farhan Faris said, “We have given guidance to the Muslim women to not to cover their faces in this emergency situation… (But) if you make it a law, people will become emotional and this will bring another bad impact … it is their religious right.”

Meanwhile, intelligence information revealed another wave of attacks is being planned by the terror groups and the persons could be dressed in military uniforms and use a van.
