Brzail has been in news regularly lately. Zika epidemic and Rio Olympics 2016 are the highlights. Risk for spread of the virus is the main matter of concern, but the World Health Organization updated a report revealing flu is a bigger health threat for the athletes than Zika.
The WHO, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control have said the risk from Zika virus is low as it is winter there and mosquitoes are not around in great numbers.
More to this, the number of new Zika cases on record has been declining and authorities have been taking precautions in killing off the mosquitoes and hence controling the mosquito populations.
Despite all these claims of precautions of further spread of Zika virus, some athletes are yet not willing to take the risks of participating in the Games.
Top-ranked players including golfers Jason Day and Rory Mcllroy as well as tennis players Simona Halep too have been simply saying no to the Rio Olympics.
However, some athletes have mocked the fear too. South African golf legend Gary Player said, “You’ve got more of a chance of being killed by a gun or a motorcar in America than getting Zika.”
