Google X will henceforth be called as Waymo, a new way forward in mobility. It will be a separate entity under parent company Alphabet.

Ex-Hyundai North America John Krafcik has been appointed as the CEO, who addressed Tuesday an audience of mostly press people in San Francisco recollecting the unit had fully conducted the first fully driverless ride on public roads last year in Austin, Texas. It was a historic moment for them to ride a blind man alone using a car with no steering wheels and no pedals too on the city streets.

Google X had earlier appointed ex-Airbnb and TripAdvisor exec Shaun Stewart too indicating the unit is on the way to become a commercially viable company.

Krafcik talked about a range of potential opportunities with their technology. He said the driverless vehicles can be used in transportation, trucking, logistics, public transport and more in more categories.

He added Waymo will not be producing driverless vehicles, but to only focus on the technology that drives the car.

He mentioned, “We are a self driving technology company… We’ve been really clear that we’re not a car company although there’s been some confusion on that point. We’re not in the business of making better cars. We’re in the business of making better drivers.”
