Hair loss, also known as alopecia, is a common condition that can be very distressing. Although countless treatments are available, the FDA has approved only two drugs for treating hair loss.

Although these drugs have been demonstrated to be effective in clinical trials, they also involve significant side effects and risks.

Causes of Hair Loss

Hair loss can be caused by illness, stress, hormonal illnesses, pregnancy, medicines, infections, certain hairstyles, or diseases like diabetes.

“Common baldness,” or androgenetic alopecia, is the most common cause of male hair loss and can also occur in women. Common baldness is often inherited.

Rogaine (Minoxidil)

Minoxidil is sold as Rogaine, which available by prescription and is also available over the counter in lesser strengths. Minoxidil was originally developed to treat high blood pressure, but some clinical trial participants noticed that they were regrowing their hair.

Minoxidil was first taken in pills, but is now used topically. Hair loss shampoo containing minoxidil may help reduce hair loss and grow new hair.

Both men and women can take minoxidil, but it tends to be more effective in women.

Propecia (Finasteride)

Finasteride is sold as Propecia, available by prescription only. Merck developed Finasteride to treat enlarged prostate glands, but men participating in clinical trials also noticed hair growth.

Finasteride is taken as a pill and can only be taken by men. Finasteride is less effective at treating receding hairlines.

Limitations of Hair Loss Products

Hair loss products generally are not effective at treating receding hairlines. Additionally, treatments must continue indefinitely or hair loss will resume; there is not a way to “cure” hair loss. They also may involve side effects.

Side Effects to Hair Loss Products

There are also potential side effects and dangers in hair loss medications; for example, finasteride can lead to serious birth defects and should not be used by pre-menopausal women.

More Hair Loss Options

Several additional options exist for people suffering from alopecia. Hairpieces, hair extensions, and hair weaves may help people who want to improve their appearance. Specialists can custom-make hairpieces to fit your needs.

If You Are Concerned About Hair Loss

If you are concerned about hair loss, speak to your doctor about possible treatments. Do not take products that are not FDA-approved, and always read directions carefully.

Although some hair loss treatments can be effective, they also involve risks. Consider what costs, risks or side effects you are willing to endure in the pursuit of better hair.
