Everybody knows that raising a child isn’t cheap. While there are many families out there that have children and don’t expect it, they soon realize how much they are going to have to spend in order to keep that baby living a healthy life. From health care to daily diapers and supplies, the average family member can plan on paying more than just a few thousand dollars just to start off.

Where will most money be spent

The major bill that is going to hurt most new parents is the hospital bills. Hospital bills are going to cost more than $10,000 to $25,000+ just for the delivery of the child. If you don’t have health insurance, this number can easily fall into this range. For those that have health insurance that covers a pregnancy, you’ll be delighted to know that most of this will be covered and you’ll only be responsible for the deductible.

After the hospital bills, another major bill is going to be the necessary start up supplies. These startup supplies are going to include the car seat, the stroller, high chair, furniture and more. Even if these items are purchased at a local thrift store, the price tag can easily reach beyond the $2,000 mark.

Once that baby is born and all the supplies have been purchased and the hospital bills have been paid, there are still bills that have to be paid. The diapers, wipes, clothing and monthly doctor’s visits will all be necessary. Plan to spend at least $200 to $400 a month, depending on your budget. Keep in mind that frugal families can save a lot with coupons, etc.

How can I save money

Start planning on shopping with thrift stores or even look around at garage sales. Babies won’t wear their clothes that long when they are at the age of two months. You’ll soon notice that they will outgrow their clothes relatively fast.

With diapers and wipes, be sure to purchase these items in bulk. You’ll find that warehouse stores can allow you to save when more than the typical quantity is purchased. The last thing that you should look out for is the coupons. Major brands such as Huggies and Pampers offer coupons both online and in the daily newspaper to help you save on your next purchase.
