Massive Quake Jolts Southern Japan Causing Landslides

After Thursday’s 6.5-magnitude earthquake the southern Japan was again jolted strongly on Friday-Saturday mid-night in the Kyushu region.

At least 9 people were killed in Thursday’s quake and the toll has raised to 32 after the latest earthquake of 7.0-magnitude that struck near the city of Kumamoto and toppled buildings, collapsed bridges as well as shredded structures into piles of debris.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said more than 23 people are buried inside buildings.

Suga added about 1,500 people have been injured and 70,000 others have been evacuated.

Friday and Saturday saw tons of aftershocks including a 5.4-magnitude earlier today.

Japan Meteorological Agency said Thursday’s quake was a precursor and the latest powerful one in mid-night was the main quake. The epicenters of both the quakes were relatively shallow, about 6 miles.

According to NHK TV, about 8 quakes were felt in an average per hour on Friday and Saturday.

Japanese media reports about 200,000 homes are without electricity and in some areas drinking water systems too have been failed.

Suga added about 20,000 rescue men have been deployed in the operation.
