In a new report it is revealed even normal-sized heads in the new born may be affected with Zika virus, leading to the possibilities of brain damage.

Lead author of the study, Cesar Victora, said in some of the cases they found women experienced Zika-linked rash in late pregnancy and the babies delivered had brain damage.

Victora is from Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil and details of the study are published lately in a journal. They studied more than 600 cases Zika virus infection in the country and found over 100 had head circumferences within the normal range.

He said in one-third of the cases women didn’t experience rash in late pregnancy.

Dr. Guiherme Loureiro Werneck of the University of Rio de Janeiro and even Dr. Jorg Heukelbach of the University of Ceara said a definitive test for Zika virus infection is required.

Meanwhile, Dr. Tom Frieden from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Zika threat is real to the US as infection among pregnant women is rising even though no local transmissions have been reported.

Until now over 250 Zika infected pregnant women have been reported in mainland US with mild symptoms, but can cause devastating birth defects in the new born babies.

Zika virus is transmitted through mosquitoes.
