In a new study jointly conducted by Yale and Peking Universities it is revealed air pollution harms brain too apart from lungs and heart.

Complete findings are published in the Proceedings of National Academy of Science (PNAS) journal and it writes such pollution leads to struggling in doing simple maths by elderly.

Washington-based International Food Policy Research Institute writes, “The study found significant reduction in verbal and maths skills of people exposed to air pollution over a long duration… The effect was more pronounced among men than women – and worst among the elderly.”

The study is based on a survey to about 32,000 Chinese people between the years 2010 and 2014. Air pollution exposure was calculated on them in the short run and long term as well.

The study could be correct to great extent as in the year 2015 about 25 lakh people died in India due to causes arising out of air pollution.

According to senior Greenpeace India campaigner Sunil Dahiya impact of China’s air pollution could be compared to that of India.

Trajectory of development for the two Asian countries are same and so the sources of pollution too. Magnitude of impact may be different but impact on health could be the same, said Dahiya.

It is said cognitive decline or impairment may lead to Alzheimer or other forms of dementia.
