Pregnant Women Should Avoid 11 Southeast Asian Countries: CDC On Zika Virus

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has lately warned pregnant women not to travel to several Southeast Asian countries including Thailand as Zika virus has started spreading.

CDC said Zika travel notice regions should be avoided by pregnant women and they should consider postponing non-essential travel to eleven listed countries in Southeast Asia.

The countries included in the list are Burma, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Maldives, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and Timor-Leste as well.

Two Zika cases were confirmed Friday in Thailand to be linked to the virus. Both the newborn babies have small heads.

CDC has also updated the recommendation that urge women to postpone pregnancy or else stay away from Zika virus regions if planning to get pregnant.

Men living in the Zika zone are urged to avoid unprotected sex for about six months even if infection symptoms are not visible.

It is yet to be made clear whether the Southeast Asia spread is an outbreak and it is somewhat different too from the one spreading across the Americas.

Meanwhile, in one of the latest studies the link between Zika virus and microcephaly has been further strengthened. Commissioned by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, the preliminary results point Zika is main culprit behind the babies born with smaller head in the country.
