United States is facing opioid epidemic. In a new survey it is found 44 percent of people believe it to be serious problem.

A data reveals about 100 Americans are killed every day by the drug including heroin and prescription painkillers.

The poll further found 48 percent of women and 38 percent of men believe prescription painkillers are a serious problem in the US.

If believed to the American Society of Addiction Medicine, women are more likely prescribed painkillers compared to men. It is also said they are prescribed slightly higher doses of the painkillers and for longer periods. This means women get addicted to the drug faster than men.

In a period between 1999 and 2010 the overdose rate increased by 400 percent among women and it was only an increase of 237 percent among men, reveals US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The agency further adds during the same period more deaths were caused due to fatal drug overdoses than car accidents.

The Gallup poll found fabout 55 pervent of the people knowing about the negative aspects of prescription drug blamed the pharmaceutical industry for encouraging the doctors to prescribe such opioids.
