Sri Lanka freezes bank accounts of blast suspects

Sri Lanka has frozen ank accounts of 41 terror suspects linked with outlawed Islamist extremist group National Thawheed Jammath (NTJ) in connection to the bombings in churches and luxury hotels on Easter Sunday.

According to police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara the suspects are currently under custody and total fund balance in the accounts together was Rs 134 million.

The police had seized Rs 14 million from their possessions at the time of arrest.

Nine suicide bombers carried out explosions on three churches and three luxury hotels that killed 258 people and wounded more than 500 others. ISIS terror group claimed responsibility of all the attacks.

However, government blamed the explosions were carried out by the NTJ.

In the wake of the explosions Sri Lankan President Maithripala Srisena imposed emergency in the country and Wednesday it was extended for another month.

With the emergency police and military gets extensive powers to arrest and interrogate suspects even without court orders.

Initially the emergency was imposed on April 23 citing public security.
