Immediate closure of Moshi Cement factory has been orderd by Minister of State in the Vice-President’s Office, Union and Environment, January Makamba, demanding the implementation of the National Environment Management Council (NEMC)’s recommendations.

Makamba said, “This factory should from effective today halt operations pending implementation of NEMC recommendations on environment pollution.”

He added the coucil directed the factory’s management after making a visit to it to observe the Environment Management Act of 2004.

The act provides legal and institutional framework for sustainable management of the environment.

It is learned the council had earlier directed factory management to erect special fence too at the factory.

Factory representative said the fence would be constructed following receiving the title deed of the plot.

Makamba also urged the environmental stakeholders to protect Lake Chala from environment pollution as the water level has declined due to climate change resulting from environmental pollution.

He added a meeting will soon be held between Tanzania and Kenya to draw collective strategies to protect the lake.
