Tornado leaves trail of severe damage in Lawrence, Kansas

At least eleven people have been injured Tuesday after a tornado hit Lawrence in Kansas forcing international airport to shut down briefly due to damage and two flights were diverted.

Several tornadoes hit region for more than a week and NWS issued a tornado emergency alert for eastern Kansas Tuesday night.

According to police massive tornado hit Lawrence and left power lines, large trees and debris along the streets. Some of the major roads became impassable after the tornado.

Lawrence Police Department tweeted, “Most structural damage appears to have occurred near Lawrence as the tornado passed just outside the city limit… Please do not go sight seeing tornado damage. This only hampers the efforts of emergency workers.”

Tuesday night about 13,000 people were left without electricity in Lawrence.

Monday nigth the tornado devastated parts of Ohio and thousands of people were left without power and water.

Dayton Assistant Fire Chief Nicholas Hosford said, “I don’t know that any community is fully prepared for this type of devastation… We have homes flattened, entire apartment complexes destroyed, businesses throughout our community where walls have collapsed.”

The tornado warning was also for the New York City, but it did not materialize.

An alert statement released by NWS Tuesday read, “Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely… This Tornado Warning replaces the Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for the same area.”
