Take your holiday pace down a notch with a relaxing day in tiny but gorgeous Trogir. Just an hour by bus from busy Split, you can enjoy classic architecture, good views and great seafood without having too far to walk for any of it.

Trogir, Unesco Heritage in Croatia

Most of the village of UNESCO World Heritage listed Trogir (population only 600) is found on a tiny island, connected to mainland Croatia by bridge. In fact, the island lies between a bigger one, Ciovo, and the mainland, so you can also walk off the island to the other side. But don’t: spend a relaxing day exploring Trogir instead. A map is handy but not essential, because if you walk too far, you’ll just reach the water again.

Churches and Cathedrals on Trogir

Two churches on Trogir are worth seeing – although there are several more, and all are worth a wander through if you chance upon them. The Cathedral of St Lovro in the main old town square is a mix of renaissance and romanesque styles, and in Dalmatian culture the sculpture of Adam and Eve inside it is famous. This cathedral also has a tower which is sometimes open for visitors to climb – do get up there if you can, because any aerial view over Trogir is gorgeous.

The Church of St John the Baptist, just a little closer to the edge of the island of Trogir and further away from the mainland, is also worth a visit. There’s some amazing carving inside and a slightly less overwhelming feel.

Trogir’s Kamerlengo Fortress

From the old town square, take a leisurely stroll along the southern shore of Trogir – this is a waterfront area full of outdoor cafes and gorgeous architecture, including the South Town Gate, the Lucic Palace and the Fontana Hotel. At the western tip of the island you’ll find the Kamerlengo Fortress, which looks like the classic fortress a child would draw.

Seasonally, you can find movies being played inside the Fortress, and during the day you can take a walk inside and on top of the walls. Getting to the top is not too exhausting and the views over the sea and over the village of Trogir itself are really picture-perfect. With such a classic-styled fortress, you can start to imagine living there in medieval times.

To enjoy the rest of your time in Trogir, wander into the heart of the island down some of the meandering cobblestoned paths. There are dozens of tiny shops, cafes and restaurants to discover, and some of these are home to fantastic seafood dishes.
