What Is Mental Health?

An emotional or cognitive well being is called mental health or a level of health where there is no clinical mental illness. From the point of view of holistic approach or a positive psychology mental health is actually individual’s ability to cope up with life’s pressure and enjoy life. It is a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience. It is the state where it measures the capacity to express our emotions and the adaptability to a range of demands.

The World Health Organization defines mental health as a “state of well-being in which an individual can express a balance character and properly understand the nuances of life and cope up with all pressures. Mental health can contribute well to the community. All cultural, subjective assessments and competing professional theories all affect how “mental health” is defined.

Mental health is not just a state but a range of different values. It is generally considered as a positive attribute, without a diagnosable mental health problem. The definition of mental health can be a life with a full of creative growth, highlights the emotional well being and ability to deal with life’s inevitable challenges. Many holistic approach or self help books offer different methods to adapt with different life’s challenges and acquire a positive mental state. Positive psychology is increasingly prominent in mental health.

Social mental health can be defined in a various aspects, depending on professions, communities, societies and cultures and all of these have various ways of conceptualizing its nature and cause. Therefore, while treating a mental illness or regain a mental health one has to look after cultural and religious background.
