In a new study it is found eating whole-grain variety instead of processed white grains helps in having longer live.

Study author Dr. Qi Sun said the risk of premature death reduces by one-fifth if one eats three or more servings of whole grains a day.

Sun is an assistant professor of nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston. He added especially deaths from cardiovascular disease is reduced by eating whole-grain variety.

Whole-grain foods include oatmeal, brown rice, whole-wheat flour and whole cornmeal. It is so named as contains the entire grain kernel that includes the outer husk bran, the nutrient-rich core germ and middle layer endosperm as well.

Refined grains lack bran and germ along with fiber, iron and many of the B vitamins too.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) lists white breads, white rice and white flour under refined grains.

The researchers reviewed several earlier findings and data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) too. They studied about 800,000 people from US, UK and Scandinavian countries. The study covered a period of about four decades.

Sun said low-carbohydrate diets should be adopted with caution.

Details of the study are published in the Circulation journal on June 13.
