Most of the refugee and migrant children in Europe are unaccompanied and this is something threatening to them of abuse, exploitation and death, said UNICEF.

Titled as Danger Every Step of the Way, the report of the organization revealed at least 7,009 unaccompanied children crossed from North Africa to Italy this year.

Last year the figure was half to this.

UNICEF Special Coordinator for the Refugee and Migrant crisis in Europe, Marie-Pierre Poirier, said the situation is desperate and silent too.

Poirier added, “We urgently need to protect these children from all types of abuse and exploitation by those taking advantage of the situation to exploit their dreams.”

UNICEF further mentioned in the report the unaccompanied children rely on human smugglers and gets exploited easily.

Between January 1 and June 5 this year a total of 2,809 refugee and migrant died in the Mediterranean while trying to cross and seek shelter in Europe.

In 2015 the death figure was 3,770.

It is reported some of the adolescents are abused sexually too.

In Libya there are 235,000 migrants and tens of thousands of them are unaccompanied children.
