Belgium defeated England with 2-0 and finished third in the Russia World Cup 2018 on Saturday. The two goals came from Thomas Meunier and Eden Hazard.

The team gained early lead in first half with Meuner’s goal and Hazard managed to net the second in the 82nd minute. First twenty minutes of the game was well dominated by Belgium as host of chances came their way.

Throughout the match Belgium was the better side while England crawled without getting any clear-cut chance. However, in the second half the Three Lions came close to scoring when Marcus Rashford slipped a good pass to Eric Dier.

This was Belgium’s best World Cup finish and defeated the English team twice in a fortnight. In fact it waited 82 years to beat England.

Belgium finished fourth in 1986 and so finishing a high this time means the players deserve some credit. Under this note couple of key players of the team should return for the 2022 World Cup. However, not to forget that Vincent Kompany and Jan Vertonghen may probably be gone by then, and Martinez has just signed an extension until after Euro 2020.

Tomorrow is the final match of the 2018 World Cup. Croatia and France will face each other at the Luzhniki Stadium in capital city Moscow.

Since 1950, after Uruguay, Croatia is the smallest country to reach a World Cup final. It has a population of only 4.1 million, very similar to that of Kuwait or Mauritania.

By the next World Cup in Qatar the country’s population could further decrease as people leaving Croatia lately in search of a more prosperous life has become a trend.
