In the White House the Republican-led Congress has been asked to approve an emergency fund of $1.9 billion for Zika virus preparedness. President Barack Obama made the request in February this year and pressure is being mounted by health officials.

Dr. Anne Schuchat, a deputy director at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said everything related to the Zika virus is scarier than initially thought.

Schuchat added, “And so while we absolutely hope we don’t see widespread local transmission in the continental U.S., we need the states to be ready for that.”

Zika virus is linked to birth defect micocephaly in Brazil and is rapidly spreading in the Caribbean and Latin America.

The White House is currently redirecting $589 million of fund approved earlier for Ebola virus to prepare for Zika before the warm weather spreads it in the continental United States.

According to Dr Antony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the US officals may be foreced to redirect some more funds that are dedicated for the research in malaria, tuberculosis and a universal flu vaccine if Congress fails to approve the Zika virus funding in the White House.
