Right engine of a Singapore Airlines plane, fight SQ368 and Boeing 777-300ER, burst into flames on Monday (local time) after making an emergency landing at Changi Airport.

Airlines official said the plane took off from the airport at around 2:25 a.m. (local time) with ninteen crew members and 222 passengers. It was to reach Milan at 8:45 a.m.

After a journey of two hours the pilot had to return back the plane for an emergency landing following an engine oil warning message.

Both Changi Airport authorities as well as Singapore Airlines officials said within minutes the fire was extinguished and all the boarded were evacuated safely.

Investigations would start shortly and the airlines confirmed to be cooperating fully.

Passengers will be shifted to another flight for Milan on the same day, later.

Immediately after the burst a passenger by name Lee Bee Yee updated his Facebook status writing, “We were so close to death! I am still in the plane with all passengers. But I think we are safe for now…”

The Boeing is 10-year-old aircraft equipped with GE90 engine manufactured by General Electric.

Asia Managing Editor at industry publication Flightglobal said while landing the sparks from hot brakes may have triggered fire.
